The Watches of Magnum PI

The Chronosport & Rolex Watches Worn by a Cultural Icon of the W.O.E. Community 

Despite often missing the mark in realism, Hollywood’s influence on special operations and the intelligence community has been profound, especially when it comes to watches. I personally know several real “operators” and “spies” in the military and intelligence community who purchased watches due to their association with fictitious characters. 

007’s well-publicized relationships with Rolex and Omega are the low-hanging fruit, but there is another prominent example from a character that also influenced a generation in a completely different way: Thomas Magnum, private investigator. 

A decorated Vietnam-era SEAL and naval intelligence officer, Lieutenant Commander Magnum’s fictional adventures as a private investigator on the Hawaiian island of Oahu lasted only eight years, from 1980 to 1988, and some 162 episodes, but his legacy as a cultural icon endures for many in the W.O.E. community. From his signature aloha shirts to shorts with an almost immeasurable inseam to his red Ferrari 308 GTS, Tom Selleck’s Thomas Magnum was the archetype of 1980s masculinity, and a rare media portrayal of a former special operator in an era before SEALs wrote books or hosted leadership podcasts. 

Magnum was an icon for a lot of reasons, including the watches on his wrist.

Magnum’s influence wasn’t relegated to mustaches, military surplus tank tops, and aviator sunglasses, either. Throughout the series, the former SEAL wore watches that were especially well selected for the role, accurately mirroring in media the pervasive role played by timepieces among real special operators. In this Dispatch, we’ll chronicle the watches of Thomas Magnum, including a seldom-seen Chronosport inexorably linked to the character as well as the venerable Rolex GMT, a watch we have often called the ideal CIA Case Officer’s watch. 

Chronosport Sea Quartz 30

Released in 1977, the Chronosport Sea Quartz 30 was Magnum’s first watch, appearing on his wrist on a Tropic-style rubber strap for the first three seasons of the show. With 300 meters of water resistance, an acrylic bezel insert, and the signature “Monnin case” produced by MRP SA, what was most notable about the Sea Quartz 30 was its movement, which was among the first quartz calibers placed in a professional diving watch. 

While the watches were produced in Switzerland, Chronosport was founded in England in 1963 as a mail-order supplier of tool watches before changing hands in the 1970s to North American ownership, which was where the Sea Quartz 30 was born. Intriguingly, Magnum’s use of the watch was reportedly not paid product placement but rather an informed decision on behalf of the show’s prop masters seeking a capable watch for a fictional former SEAL living an active Hawaiian lifestyle.

In part propelled by its on-screen Magnum antics, Chronosport became a mainstay at dive shops and earned a passionate following among the military, factors that led to the creation of the Chronosport UDT, or Universal Dive Timer, in 1981. An all-black analog-digital watch produced for Chronosport by none other than Breitling, the UDT was a favorite of special operators. W.O.E. interview alum Dave Hall wore a UDT, and the watch was also favored by fictional characters, including John Rambo, in First Blood in 1982. 

Back to Thomas Magnum, the Sea Quartz 30 was an appropriate if off-the-beaten-path choice for a Ferrari-driving open-ocean swimmer and PI, which also signaled the expanding industry-wide shift to quartz timekeeping, especially for more attainable tool watches. For decades, the Sea Quartz 30 was a watch known mostly to collectors and deep-nerd fans of the show. In 2023, Momentum, which is owned by the same family that operated Chronosport, revived the watch as the Momentum Sea Quartz 30.

If you’re looking to LARP as Thomas Magnum, which is a reasonable pursuit, for $300 or so, the newer Momentum is a fun watch to check out. I just hope you can grow a mustache… 

Magnum & the Rolex GMT

By season four, Magnum PI was among the most popular television shows in the world and translated into dozens of languages, propelling Tom Selleck into international superstardom. Whether the popularity led to a change in Magnum’s watch of choice from the unassuming Chronosport, we can only speculate, but by season four, Magnum switched to a Rolex GMT-Master, likely reference 16750 but potentially also a 1675. The Rolex GMT was also carefully woven into the show’s storyline. 

In episode one of season four, entitled "Home from the Sea", a flashback shows Magnum’s father, a naval aviator, promising a Rolex GMT similar to his own to a young Thomas if he can beat his record for treading water. At Magnum senior’s funeral, after the aviator was killed in the Korean War, an oversized Rolex GMT is seen dangling from a young Thomas Magnum’s wrist, implying that he ended up with his dad’s GMT. Assuming it’s a 1675, which debuted in 1959, it would have been a historically tough purchase for a naval aviator who died in a conflict that ended in 1953, especially considering the first GMT-Master, the 6542, also wasn’t commercially available until 1955. But never let truth get in the way of a good story.

While the Chronosport was an interesting horological Hollywood footnote that owes the entirety of its legend to the show, the Rolex GMT was an icon in its own right and would become the timepiece most closely associated with Magnum for the rest of the series. Incredibly, Tom Selleck was able to keep the watch after the show wrapped in May 1988, and the actor still reportedly owns the screen-worn watch today. In a 2018 interview with FHH, Selleck famously said: 

"My Rolex GMT-Master has been underwater, buried in sand, taken I don’t know how many knocks, and never a problem. It’s called the Pepsi because the bezel colors are the same as the Pepsi logo. Personally, I thought the red went well with the Ferrari and the blue matched Hawaii’s lagoons and sky."

There are a few things we won’t do, and arguing with Tom Selleck about a Rolex GMT is one of them. Should he ever decide to let the Magnum PI GMT-Master go, we expect it would set the auction world ablaze. To save Selleck the trouble, we’d recommend he reach out to us first. 

Rolex GMT - The Ideal Case Officer’s Watch

Beyond the fictional backstory, Magnum’s Rolex GMT also resonates with fans because of how accurately it fits Magnum’s character and represents Rolex of that era. Capable of tracking a second time zone at a glance, the Rolex GMT was historically favored by civilian and military pilots, Army Special Forces, Navy UDT frogmen, and CIA officers, including Billy Waugh. 

I have long argued that the Rolex GMT, any reference, is the ultimate CIA Case Officer’s watch; a classy and refined tool that signals to others you are a man of culture, yet don’t mind getting your hands dirty, making it the perfect watch for the proverbial “Ph.D who can win a bar fight.” Thomas Magnum was a naval intelligence officer and SEAL who earned a Navy Cross in Vietnam before becoming a thrill-seeking private investigator on Oahu. He may not have been a Case Officer (or had a Ph.D), but we think he qualifies as a near-perfect Rolex GMT man. 

Final Thoughts

While the Chronosport Sea Quartz 30 captured the practical, no-nonsense side of a former SEAL, Magnum’s Rolex GMT-Master reflected the adventurous global icon his character would become as the show took off. Neither watch needed to be the focus of the show to become iconic; they were simply Magnum’s tools of choice as a generation watched Hawaii’s favorite PI dive into the Pacific and chase bad guys across Oahu in his signature red Ferrari. 

More than four decades later, Magnum’s watches are an enduring reminder that sometimes, Hollywood gets it right, and watches can add depth to onscreen characters that legitimize them in the eyes of those who know. Wearing a Seamaster because of Bond is always going to make sense, but remember, Magnum wore a Rolex GMT, which just so happens to be W.O.E.’s favorite watch, and intelligence officers don’t believe in coincidences…
