So why did WOSTEP transition 2 of their elite 3000hr 2year (free tuition) watchmaker programs in the US to 1800hr 1.5 year customer service technician courses while opening three WOSTEP 3000hr schools in China? I’ll tell you why. Rolex, Richemont, Swatch Group, LVMH, Patek Philippe, and Audemars Piguet are WOSTEP affiliated. It’s where all Swiss watchmaking get their talent. European law requires at least 60% of production cost to reside in Switzerland. If you compare Chinese labor to Swiss labor all the watches have to do is be made in China then briefly pass through Switzerland for final touches to get the “Swiss made” stamp. To get the “made in USA” stamp a watch must be “all or virtually all” made in USA. So which is better? China/swiss watch or USA watch? They quit the 3000hr course in the US because we can make better watches under a 39% tariff. It’s only a matter of time when a US company starts manufacturing ETA 2824-2 and 7750 clones for US micro brands and drop in replacements.
